Kuantan murder victim’s husband had met suspect, never expected cruel intent

PETALING JAYA: The family of the late Norshamira Zainal, 37, who was allegedly murdered before her body was found by the Kuantan River near Tanjung Lumpur Bridge last Thursday, is relieved that the suspect was arrested by police on Saturday.

The victim’s husband, Mohammad Afiq Akhmal Nudin, 31, said news of the arrest brought some comfort to the family in their pursuit of justice.

"If I were to act on my anger, I’d want to confront him (the suspect) and give him a piece of my mind... I am furious at his inhumane actions.

"I never imagined he would do such a thing to my wife. When we met last Monday, he seemed like a decent person," he expressed when contacted by Sinar Harian on Saturday (Feb 15).

Mohammad Afiq Akhmal admitted to meeting the suspect when he accompanied his wife to deliver food to the man.

"He appeared friendly and even said he wanted to treat me to grilled fish and invited me to hunt for squid with him.

"I never suspected anything and always chose to think positively about him.

"I had no idea that behind his seemingly kind demeanour, he harboured ill intentions toward my wife, leading to this heartbreaking incident," he said.

Mohammad Afiq Akhmal added that he is leaving the matter in the hands of the police and believes the suspect should receive the harshest punishment if found guilty.

Meanwhile, he shared that his wife’s remains were laid to rest at Perantau Damai Islamic Cemetery, Keratong 8, Bandar Tun Abdul Razak, at around 6pm on Friday (Feb 14).

The tragic death of the food vendor has drawn significant attention, including from the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

His Majesty personally visited the victim’s family at the Forensic Unit of Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, condemning the suspect’s actions as cruel and inhumane.

In his decree, the Sultan urged authorities to ensure the suspect is swiftly apprehended and punished for his crime.

Earlier, the media reported that a woman, who was a food vendor, was found dead, believed to have been murdered, by the Kuantan River near the Tanjung Lumpur Bridge on Thursday (Feb 13).

The 37-year-old victim’s body was discovered by a passerby, who then alerted the police at around 12:45pm.

Norshamira’s remains were claimed by her family at approximately 2:30pm before being taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Mosque, Indera Mahkota, for funeral rites. She was later transported to her hometown in Felda Keratong 9, Rompin, for burial.
