KUALA LUMPUR: MPs were shown a graphic video of violent crime during a special briefing by the Home Minister on why Sosma is needed.
Before the video was shown, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul explained that the video would only be shown to the MPs in the House and not for public viewing due to its graphic nature.
He ordered that the one-minute clip be shown in the Dewan Rakyat with the live feed cut off.
“I disallow the video from being shared in public. This footage would only be shown to MPs,” he said.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in his ministerial explanation said that the operations on the criminal group shown in the video resulted in police seizing firearms including rifles, machetes and drugs.
Earlier this month, around 50 protesters—comprising family members of Sosma detainees—staged a hunger strike outside the Sungai Buloh Prison complex after their visitation requests were denied.
On Feb 9, the media reported that police had launched an investigation into the gathering.
On Feb 13, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said in the Dewan Rakyat that Sosma remains necessary for addressing serious threats such as terrorism.
However, he emphasised that while the law should remain in force, its regulations must be clear and not subject to misuse.
