System in Titiwangsa LRT station is functional, says Loke

IPOH: The system at the Titiwangsa Light Rail Transit (LRT) station was not faulty, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said the system is designed to automatically shut down if an object falls onto the tracks.

He said this when asked if the safety system failed following a tragic incident where a blind man fell onto the tracks right at the moment the train arrived and was killed.

“Unfortunately in this case, the train arrived just as the victim fell onto the tracks.

“Whenever an object falls onto the tracks, the system will automatically shut down. But in this case, the person fell right at the moment when the train arrived,” he told reporters after launching the Stage Bus Service Transportation programme - BAS.MY service - at the town hall building here on Monday (Feb 24).

Loke however said investigations were still ongoing and that he cannot draw conclusions yet.

Following the incident on Feb 22, Loke said the safety aspects at all train stations, especially facilities for persons with disabilities would be reviewed and enhanced.

He said one of the measures was installing smart CCTV systems capable of detecting high-risk behaviour at train stations, and in the long term, Prasarana is planning to install platform screens across all LRT lines as part of efforts to increase passenger safety.

The Titiwangsa station is under the Ampang LRT Line, which is one of the older LRT lines.

The station does not have platform doors to separate passengers from the train tracks.
