KUALA LUMPUR: The arrests of four officers linked to former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is just the beginning.
Several more individuals, including prominent figures, will be called up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the case, chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said.
“The investigations are still being conducted. We will call up the witnesses soon,” he said.
Azam, however, refused to elaborate on the prominent figures to be called up.
He also refused to comment on the large amount of cash reportedly seized from an officer in connection with the case.
Azam, who confirmed that those arrested were being investigated for alleged money laundering and corruption, did not offer further details, including the exact amount of money involved in the case.
Meanwhile, the MACC said the investigation involving the four officers was being conducted under Section 16a of the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA).
“We still cannot reveal the findings of the case, including the amount of money and assets discovered,” it said.
“We will inform the public of any latest developments and we hope the people will avoid speculating on the case,” he said.
There have been reports in media portals that several millions of ringgit were seized from a house during the raids by the MACC.
On Sunday, it was reported that four officers linked to the ninth prime minister had been remanded over allegations of money laundering and corruption, said to involve millions of ringgit.
It is learnt that the four – two of them with the title of “Datuk” –were summoned to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya last Thursday to have their statements recorded.
Sources familiar with the investigation said three of them held senior positions at the Prime Minister’s Office during Ismail Sabri’s tenure.
