RMC entry applications unaffected by bullying cases

DESPITE recent bullying incidents at the Royal Military College (RMC), applications for enrolment have surged significantly, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari revealed that applications jumped from 2,200 last year to 3,990 this year, despite only 260 available spots – an 80% increase.

“The confidence of Malaysians in RMC is very high. To be accepted into RMC, an applicant’s abilities, talents and co-curricular background will be taken into account,” Adly said when answering Dr Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar) during Question Time yesterday.

Adly acknowledged that some students might be negatively influenced by their peers but stated that both RMC and the armed forces prioritise high discipline in their graduates.

“They are the future of the nation, our defence system and also our civil service,” he added.

Earlier, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) asked whether RMC staff would be held accountable if they failed to report bullying cases.

Adly responded that RMC adheres strictly to the institution’s “Putera’s Oath,” which explicitly prohibits any form of physical action against students or staff.

“Anyone who bullies, whether they are students or coaches, we will take action against them.

“We will not only take stern action towards bullies, but they will also face the law for their actions,” he said.
