KUALA LUMPUR: Travelers from 63 countries and those holding the long-term visit pass might be allowed to use the quick response (QR) code system for Immigration clearance at Malaysia’s borders beginning Jan 1 next year, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Saifuddin said the government is planning to expand the use of the Immigration Department’s QR code system to these travelers.
According to Saifuddin, presently, the QR code system is only used by Malaysians at immigration borders.
“But our passport autogate has allowed travelers from the 63 countries and Asean countries, including those with long term visit passes, to use it,” said Saifuddin during Question Time in Parliament on Tuesday (May 4).
The QR code clearance system can be used by Malaysians via the MyBorderPass app.
Saifuddin also said that presently, about 172 Immigration officers are stationed at Immigration counters.
“But, when the (QR Code) system is fully installed, there will only be 68 staff.
“We will have a reduction of labour of nearly 60%.” said Saifuddin.
Saifuddin also said the Malaysian passport is in the top 10 most trusted passports in the world,
Meanwhile, Saifuddin said that through the MyBorderPass app, travelers can check their traveling status from the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) and the national higher education fund corp (PTPTN).
“So, they can check if they have existing police, or LHDN reports and they will no longer be stuck at the airports,” added Saifuddin.
