Melaka hosts largest 'bubur lambuk' mass cooking event for Ramadan

MELAKA: The Historic City hosted the largest "bubur lambuk" (porridge) cooking event in conjunction with the Ramadan month, where 300 participants prepared 14,000 servings.

Melaka Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Committee deputy chairman, Low Chee Leong, said the cooking programme, held along Jalan Hang Tuah, is the largest of its kind in the state.

"Participants from various government agencies, the trishaw association, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were involved in the event, which began at 9am on Saturday (March 8).

"We prepared the bubur lambuk in 36 large pots through a communal effort," he said when contacted.

Low, who is also the Kota Laksamana assemblyman, was invited by the organiser as the dignitary. He plans to propose to the state government to make the programme an annual event at Jalan Hang Tuah during Ramadan.

"This large-scale cooking and distribution of bubur lambuk should be held every year to stimulate the local economy, particularly in areas where Malay traders sell traditional clothing and other heritage items.

"This is a tradition that we must preserve and uphold in promoting it to our tourists," he added.
