KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz will take time to consider his membership in Umno after meeting the party president.

The Umno supreme council member said he would take heed of the advice given by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi not to be hasty with his decision.

“Yes, I did meet the party president recently and we talked about my position in the party.

“I listened to his advice and we exchanged views on the matter.

“For the time being, I will continue to engage with the president while also focusing on my ministerial duties,” he told reporters after launching the Madani Digital Trade here yesterday.

On Wednesday, Ahmad Zahid said he recently met Tengku Zafrul, who had expressed his intention to quit the party.

However, Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said he told the Kota Raja Umno division chief not to rush into making a decision on the matter.

Asked about the meeting, Tengku Zafrul, who is also Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, described it as a “good meeting” with “open discussions” between them.

“We both agreed that we must give proper consideration to the importance of making sure that whatever decision made, it is one that is right for me and the party,” he said.

Asked when he would make a decision, Tengku Zafrul said he would take “some time to think about it”.

The speculation about his political future peaked in December last year when he reportedly was set to leave Umno.

In April last year, Tengku Zafrul quit as Selangor Umno treasurer, citing differences of opinion and lack of direction in the state chapter.

He was also strongly speculated to be heading for PKR, given his good working relationship with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his being an asset in the Cabinet.
