Satok assemblyman becomes deputy minister in Sarawak Cabinet

KUCHING: Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki has been appointed as a deputy minister in the Sarawak Cabinet effective Monday.

Ibrahim, who assumes the post of Deputy Utility Minister (Sarawak Energy Bhd and Petros), was sworn in at the Astana here on Monday (March 17).

He received his letter of appointment from Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

His appointment led to a minor reshuffle of the state Cabinet, with Deputy Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi being reappointed as Deputy Minister in the Premier's Office (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara and Islamic Affairs), also effective Monday.

In a statement, the Sarawak government said the new appointment and minor reshuffle aimed to boost the energy sector, including investment in the oil and gas industry.

It said the move would also enhance service delivery to the people.

"This will enable the Sarawak government to effectively strategise its effort towards achieving Sarawak's vision of becoming a developed and high-income region under the post-Covid-19 development strategy 2030," the statement added.

Ibrahim's appointment comes following his election as a Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president last month.

He received 910 votes in the elections for the party's Bumiputera wing, the highest among the four vice-presidents' posts.

He was PBB deputy secretary-general prior to becoming a vice-president.

A lawyer by training, Ibrahim is the chief whip of the ruling state coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

He is also chairman of Sarawak Energy Bhd.
