MAHB sees strong int'l interest in Subang Airport's extra capacity

PETALING JAYA: Any vacated capacities at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, or Subang Airport, will be made available to other airlines and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) is anticipating strong interest from international carriers.

MAHB said that as part of the Subang Airport Regeneration Plan (SARP), it is also committed to developing various non-terminal projects including maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, business jet operations and other aerospace-related ventures.

“These projects will continue as planned and are not dependent on the continuation of scheduled jet operations at Subang.

“Notwithstanding, any vacated capacity at the airport will be made available to other airlines, both international and local.

“We anticipate strong interest from international carriers which may enhance the airport's connectivity and its role as a preferred gateway for regional travel.

"This aligns with broader efforts to diversify and optimise the airport’s operations beyond domestic services,” MAHB said in a statement on Wednesday (March 19).

MAHB said its long-term strategic focus is to strengthen KL International Airport (KLIA) as Malaysia’s primary aviation hub, with Subang Airport complementing its capacity.

SAVING LIVES, ONE LIVER AT A TIME

“This approach is in line with the broader direction set by MAHB’s new shareholders, who have emphasised enhancing connectivity and strengthening Malaysia’s aviation network to drive growth,” it said.

MAHB said the SARP plays a vital role in supporting economic growth by strengthening the nation’s aerospace ecosystem and positioning Subang airport as a hub for high-value aviation support services.

“Subang airport’s development will focus on strengthening high-value aviation industries such as MRO facilities, business jet operations and aerospace-related businesses, such as sectors that align with global trends and support Malaysia’s broader aviation objectives,” it said.

MAHB also said Subang Airport’s strategic location makes it well-positioned to thrive as a hub for business aviation and premium short-haul connectivity.

“MAHB remains committed to working with stakeholders to ensure the airport’s growth is market-driven, financially viable and aligned with national aviation goals,” it added.

Recently, Batik Air CEO Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy said the airline was looking to secure six additional slot pairs at Subang Airport in the short term.

SARP aims to transform Subang Airport into a leading city hub by 2030, positioning it as a key player in the national aviation and tourism industry.
