PUTRAJAYA: A group of Palestinians who are expected to be resettled here after being released from Israeli jails will be subject to close monitoring by Malaysian security agencies, says government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He added the resettlement process has yet to begin, with Wisma Putra closely monitoring ongoing developments in Gaza.
“Aspects such as their movement and location will be enforced by our security agencies, who will also place strict conditions on their activities,” he said during his weekly post-Cabinet briefing here yesterday.
Fahmi said that the 15 were from a group of 380 Palestinians who served over 20 years’ imprisonment in Israel. They were recently freed under the ceasefire deal for the release of Israeli hostages by Palestinian resistance fighters Hamas.
However, these freed prisoners cannot remain in Gaza and must resettle elsewhere.
He said that about 100 freed Palestinians would be resettled in Qatar and another 100 in Turkiye while 15 would be resettled in Malaysia.
On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that Malaysia is prepared to accept 15 Palestinians who were released from Israeli jails and resettle them here.
He said Malaysia, which has been supporting the Palestinian struggle for decades, has decided on the resettlement of these prisoners to other countries as part of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, which took effect on Jan 19.
