Melaka's trishaw riders enjoy boosted earnings thanks to digital transformation

MELAKA: Over 260 of the historic city's vibrant trishaw riders are now earning between RM5,000 and RM6,000 per month, said Melaka’s Chief Minister.

Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the state government has successfully created a stable monthly income for the riders by digitising their services and enhancing the overall tourist experience.

"We have streamlined the trishaw service to transform it into a key tourism product while also preventing unregistered riders from exploiting tourists," he said in his speech when officiating the 2025 Melaka Tourism Industry Engagement Programme at a leading hotel here on Thursday (March 20).

Also in attendance were Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing; Melaka Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Wira Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman; state Entrepreneur Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Allex Seah Shoo Chin; Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot; Tourism Malaysia director-general, Manoharan Periasamy, along with other senior officials.

Ab Rauf said that his administration has also launched over 800 tourism products further to stimulate the state's economic and developmental landscape.

"The launch is in line with Melaka's selection as the host for World Tourism Day 2025 (WTD2025) and the World Tourism Conference 2025 (WTC2025), which will be followed by Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026).

"What is certain is that efforts to position Melaka as a premier tourism destination will not stop here and we will continue to move forward to achieve even greater success in the tourism sector," he added.

Meeting the region’s growing health needs

Ab Rauf further noted that the state government aims to attract 16.5mil tourist arrivals this year, with an anticipated tourism revenue of RM17.973bil.
