Boeing aircraft purchase strengthens Malaysia's position in global aviation, says Tengku Zafrul

PETALING JAYA: The purchase of Boeing aircraft by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is an investment that strengthens Malaysia's position in the global aviation industry, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said the acquisition also supports Boeing Composites Malaysia (BCM), a Boeing aircraft structure manufacturer that employs 1,000 Malaysians.

"It aligns with the country's aspiration to become a regional aerospace hub by 2030," he said in a social media post on Saturday (March 22).

On Friday, MAG announced the acquisition of 30 new Boeing aircraft as part of its fleet modernisation strategy.

It includes 18 Boeing 737-8 and 12 Boeing 737-10 aircraft powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines, with an option for 30 more 737 aircraft.

MAG also has the option to purchase 30 more planes from Boeing at a pre-determined price.

The event saw MAG group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail exchanging documents of the purchase with Boeing Global president Dr Brendan Nelson and CFM International Asia-Pacific sales and marketing vice-president Nakul Gupta.
