KUALA LUMPUR: About 600 guests attended the 2025 buka puasa event organised by the Korean Society in Malaysia on Sunday (March 23).
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who was present at the event, said it was a collaboration between her constituency, Segambut, with the society.
“In previous years, the buka puasa event was held at Desa Segambut in a kampung-style.
“However, this year it was held here with the people in Segambut and members of the Korean Society,” she told reporters at the event in United Point Mall here.
Yeoh added that such an event was also a part of the Korean Society’s corporate social responsibility programme which aimed at giving back to the locals.
“We have collaborated for about two years. The society here, who are mainly businessmen, they hire Malaysians and from the profits they make they give back to locals,” she added.
She said the society had also organised other activities such as providing vocational training and free milk programmes for children.
South Korean Minister and Consul-General Lee Han-il said that the event was also to give exposure to Korean school students in Malaysia to experience togetherness.
“I have deep respect for the spirit of Ramadan, during which the Muslim faithful fast from sunrise to sunset, practicing charity, compassion, and self-discipline.
“Buka Puasa, the meal that marks the breaking of the fast each day at sunset, is not only a time to nourish the body but also a precious opportunity to come together with neighbors, share kindness, and appreciate the value of community.
“This year’s event is especially meaningful, as it marks the first time halal Korean cuisine is being served for buka puasa, offering a unique opportunity to share the taste and warmth of Korean culture,” Lee said.
Separately, Yeoh said her ministry has also been collaborating with the Korean diaspora in terms of developing local sports talents.
