JOHOR BARU: Malaysia intends to be better prepared for any eventuality or fallout from the current global geoeconomics situation by establishing the National Geoeconomic Command Centre (NGCC), says Liew Chin Tong.
The Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said that presently, the government was taking a wait-and-see approach with the United States imposing tariffs on imported goods going there.
“This command centre will help Malaysia to understand better and monitor what is happening in geoeconomics globally and how our country can respond to it,” Liew told media during a Jom Beli di Pasar Awam event at Taman Universiti public market here on Wednesday (March 26).

The Iskandar Puteri MP added that NGCC would help the government in preparing policies and responses to global geoeconomics, especially concerning the United States.
Liew said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, chairing a meeting on Monday (March 24), had accepted a proposal from the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry to form the NGCC.
Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, in an X post on Monday, had called the NGCC a part of a wider government move to monitor tariffs, sanctions, and supply chain risks across the globe to coordinate multi-ministry responses.
“This important initiative will monitor tariffs, sanctions, and supply chain risks while coordinating responses across ministries and sectors,” he said.
“Our focus is to find smart solutions and build credibility as a neutral key trading partner for all major powers.”
The NGCC would consist of various ministries, including the Finance Ministry, Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, Economic Ministry, Foreign Ministry and other agencies such as the Customs Department.
Tengku Zafrul added that the move showed the government's commitment to strengthening the country’s economic resilience.
