JB to study expanding flood warning system, says mayor

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru City Council will conduct a study to expand its flood warning system to cover hotspot areas in the city, says mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad.

He added that the system was first introduced last year at Sungai Chat to assist residents in Kampung Mohd Amin and other areas in Johor Baru.

He added that the expansion was necessary to provide early warnings to residents in flood-prone areas, enabling them to evacuate to safer locations before receiving official directives from rescue agencies.

“Our priority is to save lives, and that is what matters most. Recently, authorities and council teams were mobilised even before water levels rose significantly,” he said when met after the council meeting at Menara MBJB here on Thursday (March 27).

He added that the intensity of rainfall this year was unprecedented, leading to flooding in areas that had never been affected before.

“For instance, Taman Tampoi Indah had not experienced flooding in nearly 30 years, yet it was hit this time.

“This highlights the urgent need to develop better warning systems, especially for those living near rivers and flood hotspots,” he said.

COMBATING THE TOBACCO CRISIS

He added that the flooding on March 20 was one of the worst in over 30 years, particularly in Kampung Pasir and Taman Tampoi Indah.

This was due to the overflow of Sungai Skudai, which exceeded its danger level of 1.5 metres.
