All parties must respect Islam’s position as the Federal Religion, says Mohd Na’im

PUTRAJAYA: All parties must respect the position of Islam as the Federal Religion, which is embraced by the majority of the people in Malaysia, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution, says the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar (pic).

In a statement on Friday (March 28), he said all parties must avoid raising any issues that could spark religious sensitivity, as they could face legal action.

Referring to the recent incident of insulting Prophet Muhammad SAW on social media, Mohd Na'im said such actions were irresponsible and deeply regrettable.

"I am deeply saddened that incidents like this are still occurring among Malaysians, who should have understood the boundaries of religious sensitivity and the legal implications of making any statements or comments, especially on social media platforms," he said.

In this regard, he said agencies under the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) will continue to strengthen efforts and public awareness programs to ensure that the public is more cautious in using social media and always maintains proper manners and respects the boundaries of religious sensitivity.

"These efforts are important to preserve harmony and well-being among races and religions in our country," he added.

On Thursday (March 27), the National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang urged the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate and take stern action against a Facebook account holder who was alleged to have insulted Prophet Muhammad SAW through a social media post.

Tackling outbreaks head-on

Aaron said insulting any religion not only violates the principles of national harmony and unity, but can also lead to very serious consequences for public peace and order.

Following this, the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the police arrested a civil servant on Thursday who was suspected of posting a comment insulting Prophet Muhammad SAW on Facebook recently. - Bernama
