Flash floods: Temporary relief shelters set up in Klang and Shah Alam

The Petaling District Disaster Management Committee has opened two temporary relief shelters for residents in Klang and Shah Alam affected by floods following heavy rain on Friday (April 11) morning.

Petaling district officer Huzunul Khaidil Mohammed, who is also its disaster committee chairman, said the shelters are located at Dewan Kenanga in Section 28 for affected Kampung Bukit Lanchong residents and SK Section 16 for Kampung Padang Jawa residents.

Selangor disaster management committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi, who is also Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman, said 50 adults and 10 children from Kampung Padang Jawa were headed to the SK Section 16 relief centre and are waiting for transport at Masjid As-Solihin in Jalan Padang Jawa, Klang.

Huzunul declared the flash floods as a Level 1 disaster, indicating that the incident is localised and has no potential to spread but has caused minor damage or loss of property.

According to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, the downpour affected areas in the districts of Petaling and Klang, with floodwaters reaching 60cm.

In Shah Alam, 20 houses in Kampung Padang Jawa were affected, while in Petaling, 20 houses in Kampung Tengah were affected and 30 in Kampung Seri Aman.

Affected residents can seek temporary shelter at Masjid Putra Heights.

In Klang, 10 houses were affected in Taman Seri Jaya and affected residents can seek shelter at SK Sungai Binjai in Meru.

On social media, Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) said Jalan Batu 3 Lama, Jalan Laba 3 23/14C and Jalan Ijok 26/5 also experienced flash floods and its Squad Pantas opened the gates surrounding Taman Sri Lembayung flats to allow residents move their vehicles to safety near the Taman Sri Muda toll plaza.

Photos time-stamped at 8.46am also showed the squad using inflatable boats to rescue victims from Jalan Mantap 25/126 in Taman Sri Muda, Section 25.

As of 11.26am flood waters at Jalan Batu 3 Lama subsided and the road was reopened to traffic.

Dengkil was also affected by flash floods, according to a social media post by Selangor women, family empowerment, welfare and care economy committee chairman Anfaal Saari.

He said that a team from Pusat Wanita Berdaya had been dispatched to render aid to victims.
