JOHOR BARU: A man who had stopped to assist a motorcyclist involved in a crash was killed after being hit by a car driven by a man under the influence of alcohol.
Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the fatal incident took place at around 2.10am on Saturday (April 13) at KM16 of Jalan Johor Baru–Kota Tinggi.
The initial crash involved a motorcycle ridden by a man believed to be a Myanmar national in his 30s, who was travelling in the right lane from Johor Baru towards Taman Setia Tropika.
“The rider is believed to have lost control of the motorcycle before skidding and falling onto the road.
“He suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a statement here on Sunday (April 13).
He added that a 37-year-old local man who witnessed the crash stopped to assist, directing traffic away from the fallen rider while waiting for help to arrive.
“While he was assisting at the scene, a car driven by a 25-year-old local man crashed into him. The impact caused fatal internal injuries, and he too died at the scene,” he said.
The driver of the car sustained minor facial injuries and was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
“The suspect has been arrested and a four-day remand has been obtained to assist in further investigations,” he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) and Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deal with causing death by reckless driving and driving under the influence, respectively.
Police have urged all road users to comply with traffic laws and to take driving seriously, especially when it involves potential risks to other road users.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol is not only a serious offence but poses a significant danger to oneself and others,” said ACP Mohd Sohaimi.
