Couples arrested for allegedly assaulting maid in Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU: Two married couples have been arrested for allegedly physically assaulting their Indonesian maid at their home.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the four suspects, aged 30 to 34, were arrested at the house in Taman Johor, Skudai, at about 7.30pm on Saturday (June 13).

“The incident came to light when footage of the assault made rounds on social media.

“Investigation shows that the incident took place on July 26 last year, and we are still investigating the motive,” he said in a press conference here on Sunday (June 14).

He said the victim was believed to have secretly recorded the incident, and the footage was later uploaded online.

“The suspects are two married couples who were staying in the same house. The wives are sisters.

“We believe there are two other Indonesian maids who are victims of similar assault, and efforts are ongoing to trace them,” he said.

Comm Ab Rahaman said police also seized several items, including mobile phones, the clothing allegedly worn by the suspects in the viral video, closed-circuit television recordings and two Indonesian passports believed to belong to two of the victims.

Background checks showed that all four suspects have no previous criminal records, while urine tests found that they tested negative for drug abuse, he added.

He added that all four suspects have been remanded for one day to assist investigations under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act and Section 12(1)(f) of the Passports Act.
