IPOH: A 54-year-old woman was killed while two others were injured in a three-vehicle collision involving a lorry and two cars near the West Coast Expressway (WCE) toll plaza near Teluk Intan early on Saturday (Aug 8).
The Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the woman, who was travelling in a Toyota Vellfire, was trapped in the front passenger seat and was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry medical personnel.
He said the 59-year-old female driver of the Vellfire sustained serious injuries but was not trapped and was rescued by members of the public.
“A 50-year-old man travelling in a Honda HR-V suffered minor injuries, while the 31-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt.
“The department received a distress call at 6.32am on Saturday regarding the accident,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
He said firefighters from the Teluk Intan and Hutan Melintang fire and rescue stations were dispatched and arrived at the scene at 6.50am, about 12km away.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found a 25-tonne empty lorry and two cars, a Toyota Vellfire and a Honda HR-V, involved in the collision.
“Personnel used specialised rescue equipment, including a power-unit rescue cutter, to free the trapped woman,” he said, adding that she was later confirmed dead at the scene.
He said her remains were handed over to the police for further action, while the injured victims received initial treatment from Health Ministry medical personnel before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
The rescue operation was brought under control at 8.20am and ended at 9.20am.
A total of 11 firefighters and two fire rescue tenders were involved in the operation.
