PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has announced that there would be no by-election to fill the recently vacated parliamentary seat for Subang.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said that the commission was informed of the vacancy on Tuesday (Aug 11) by the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.
"The Speaker had informed the commission that based on Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution, there was no need to fill the unusual vacancy.
"Following this, there will be no by-election for the Subang parliamentary seat," he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Wong Chen announced on Monday (Aug 10) that he had stepped down as Subang MP.
In a statement, Wong, who is from PKR, confirmed that he had handed over his resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul last Wednesday.
“On Aug 5, I met with the Speaker and handed over my resignation letter as MP, effective 5pm, Aug 10.
This development follows political friction within PKR regarding the blocking of constituent funding allocations via the MyKHAS portal for several MPs linked to the Bersama political movement.
Wong Chen is a three-term MP, first elected to the Kelana Jaya seat in 2013, and later re-elected to the renamed Subang constituency with a landslide majority in 2018 and 2022.
