Selangor may declare holiday if host tops Sukma medal tally

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government may consider declaring an occasional holiday if the host contingent emerge overall champions at the ongoing Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026.

State youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said any announcement would only be made after the medal tally is finalised.

"We will propose the holiday to Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari for his consideration. If we emerge overall champions, perhaps an incentive could be considered for the people of Selangor.

"As for incentives for athletes who perform well, we will work on that after Sukma is over," he said in a press conference at the Selangor State Sports Council building here on Sunday (Aug 23).

Najwan said that as of 2.50pm today, Selangor had collected 85 gold medals, with the latest contributed by, among others, the women's Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports team, women's 3m springboard diving, women's singles table tennis and men's singles lawn bowls.

"However, I would also like to remind the athletes to remain focused. We have roughly a day and a half left before Sukma ends, so give it your best. Winning or losing is part and parcel of competition," he said. – Bernama
