QuickCheck: Is a regulatory body sending out messages about cash prizes under a bonus scheme?

RECENTLY, news and screenshots of emails and messages purportedly sent by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have gone viral online.

Among other things, it is claimed in the messages and emails that the MCMC is offering a cash prize through a bonus scheme offered by a telecommunications company, specifically that the recipient of the message has incomplete transactions with Maybank as they are winners of a RM270,000 TM Family Bonus Prize

Is this claim true?

VERDICT:

FALSE

In a Facebook post on its official account, the MCMC said that it has never sent any emails or messages to the public claiming that they can claim cash prizes as part of a bonus scheme offered by a telecommunications company.

It added that the public is advised to be always alert and to not be fooled by emails or messages of questionable authenticity.

“Do not give your personal information, such as your MyKad number to strangers. Being vigilant is an important part of protecting yourself from being a victim of cheating, identity theft or other such crimes,” said the MCMC in its post.

The Commission added that it urges the public to lodge a report with the authorities such as the police or the National Scam Response Centre for further action.
