IT WAS reported that a high-speed car chase took place near the Malaysia-Thai border recently and shots were fired.

Did such an incident happen?

Verdict:

TRUE

Padang Terap OCPD Deputy Supt Mulkiaman Manzar said an army team on motorcycle patrol was on its rounds along the border when it noticed a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle with a Thai registration number plate coming out of the nearby jungle and driven in a suspicious manner.

He said the incident happened at 12.35pm on Wednesday (Feb 22).

"The patrol team ordered the car to stop but was ignored and the vehicle sped off, resulting in a high-speed chase," said DSP Mulkiaman.

"The army personnel were forced to fire several shots after the suspect tried to ram their bike and almost hit other vehicles.

"As a result, the 4WD crashed into the road shoulder."

DSP Mulkiaman said two suspects, both locals, were arrested and sent to Hospital Kuala Nerang as they sustained leg and head injuries in the crash.

"Further inspection of the vehicle found several plastic bags containing what is believed to be ketum leaves.

"The case will be investigated under the Penal Code and Poisons Act 1952," he added.
