QuickCheck: Is a local bank's identity being misused by scammers?

NOT a day goes by without reports of some individual or another falling for money scams offering high-interest rates.

Retirees, teachers and other professionals have lost thousands of ringgit to such scams.

Recently, posts circulated on social media, purportedly from a credible Malaysian bank, said that depositors would be able to earn high returns with deposits as little as a few hundred ringgit.

Are scammers misusing Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd's name to dupe internet users into falling for a deposit scheme?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Bank Muamalat says that the deposit scheme is fake and is a form of a scam.

In a Facebook post, the bank urged internet users to be aware of such scams and not to be taken in by alleged high returns.

"Be wary of any scheme that promises unrealistic returns," Bank Muamalat said in its Facebook post.

It said the public can contact and report any scam to the bank's hotline at 03-2615 8000 or the National Scam Response Centre at 997.
