IPOH'S Gerbang Malam night bazaar is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, with crowds gathering there regularly to relax and enjoy themselves.
Recently, a video went viral on social media claiming to show stagnant water ponding in the bazaar's new roof canopy.
Is it true that water is collecting in Gerbang Malam's roof canopy due to an installation or design error?
VERDICT:
FALSE
The Ipoh City Council says the viral video of stagnant water on the roof canopy at Gerbang Malam is an old clip taken while the canopy was still being installed.
Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the video was taken two months ago when the installation of the roof was not fully completed.
He said the stagnant water at that time was due to heavy rain while work was being carried out, and that the canopy had yet to be stretched out at that point.
“The contractor removed the stagnant water on the day itself, although it took them a while to do so. There is no installation error, or any design error on the roof,” he said in a statement on Monday (May 15).
Rumaizi said the incident occurred only once when the canopy was yet to be fully stretched out and installed.
“Once the canopy was fully stretched out, there was no longer any issue of stagnant water despite days when it rained heavily. The installation of this roof is still in the defect liability period,” he added.
He said if there were any issues involving the canopy, it would be resolved by the contractor.
