QuickCheck: Was a viral video of a driver pulled out of his car filmed in Penang?

A DRAMATIC viral video has been making the rounds showing three men dragging a motorist out of his car and then driving off with it.

Is it true that the incident happened in Butterworth and was sparked by an unpaid debt?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Seberang Perai North OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Asri Shafie confirmed the incident to Sinar Harian, saying that it happened after the mother of the motorist failed to repay a RM100,000 loan she took in 2020.

He added that police have detained three men, aged 27 to 49, in connection with video of the incident at Jalan Bagan Lalang in Butterworth.

"The 57-year-old woman had agreed, in writing, to surrender her car if she failed to repay the loan.

"After she failed to settle it, the creditor hired three men to seize the car. The man driving the car at the time is her son," ACP Mohd Asri told Sinar Harian.

He said the three suspects were arrested in Butterworth, Seberang Jaya and Kuala Kangsar.

He told Sinar Harian that the incident was being investigated under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.
