OFFROADING is a popular past-time with many Malaysians but it is an activity that comes with a lot of inherent risks. From minor irritants such as biting bugs and getting stuck in the mud, to potentially deadly concerns such as landslips and angry elephants, drivers have to be aware of their surroundings at all times to ensure the safety of themselves, their passengers and of course their vehicles.
One unlucky soul found out the hard way that you should always be mindful of the conditions of a river if you are trying to cross after the angry current swept them and their SUV away.
According to a video of the incident that went viral recently, it happened in Tapah. Is this true?
Verdict:
FALSE
The Perak police have denied that any such incident occurred recently on Jalan Tapah-Cameron Highlands as claimed in the video that went viral on social media.
The 1-minute-54-second video showed a white SUV attempting to ford a raging river but unfortunately, the strong current of the water picked it up and pinned it to a footpath bridge then swept it away downstream.
Tapah OCPD Supt Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said the video, which they spotted on social media on Wednesday (June 14) at around 6.30pm, alleged that the incident happened near the Lata Iskandar waterfall area near Tapah.
"After a thorough investigation, we can confirm that no such incident happened on the Tapah to Cameron Highlands road," he said in a statement posted on the Tapah police Facebook page.
Supt Wan Azharuddin then went on to urge the public not to share the video as it might cause concern among the community.
