QuickCheck: Are digital wedding invites now part of scammers' playbooks?

IT is said that bogus wedding invitations are being used by scammers to deceive the public. A link is sent to the public which purportedly says it is a wedding card. Is it a trick to steal information from the public to make online transfers?

Verdict:

TRUE

Commercial Crimes Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said police had tracked down the new bogus wedding invitation scam.

"The trick is when someone opens the link, it steals information from the public and leads them to make online transfers.”

He urged the public to avoid getting caught up in any messages from questionable sources.

This is after a WhatsApp message which has gone viral on social media asking an individual to open the link given.

The link is a trick from the scammer to syphon data from the user and make online transactions without the owner's knowledge.

Ramli said the scammers were “in cahoots” and provided responses to the link given.

"It is a new modus operandi involving data groups and parties, and the public should not respond to the links given," he added.
