WHEN approached by a person asking for a donation for a worthy cause, we tend to be more willing to shell out our hard-earned money if the person appears trustworthy.
As such, it only makes sense that scammers would try to pose as these people to get “donations” from their targets.
It was said recently that a scammer was posing as a police officer when contacting people to ask for donations. Is there any truth to this?
VERDICT:
TRUE
In a statement, Bentong police chief Supt Zaiham Mohd Kahar said that reports have been received about a scammer asking for contributions to organise programmes involving the district police headquarters (IPD).
"The suspect is said to introduce himself as Tuan Nik or Tuan Syukri, and he uses a profile picture of a man in police uniform. The suspect was found to be targeting businessmen around Bentong,” he said.
Supt Zaiham said the suspect was also found using three different bank accounts for victims to give their contributions.
He added that the police have opened an investigation paper under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years with whipping and shall also be liable to fine upon conviction.
Supt Zaihan then advised those who received such calls or messages to contact the Bentong IPD at 09-2222222 or the nearest police station.
