WE ALL know that posting something on social media is akin to standing on a box in a crowd and yelling whatever it is you had to say. There is no (or at least you should not have any) expectation of privacy on the internet as with enough time, effort and will, whatever you post online can almost certainly be traced back to you. However, there has been a spate of posts on social media that has been warning people that the government is recording all phone calls and exhaustively monitoring social media and forums thanks to a new rule.
Is this true?
Verdict:
FALSE
According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the claims are false.
Their investigations found that the messages have actually been circulating since 2017, and not only that, they were being posted in other countries such as Ghana, UAE, India and even Singapore.
While over time the messages and posts were altered and translated depending on the countries they were targetting, their content remained the same.
In relation to the same issue, the Government in 2015, 2017 and 2019 through the police, the Home Affairs Ministry and the Communications and Multimedia Ministry have also denied such matters.
