QuickCheck: Are scammers posing as the NSRC with fake ‘crime claims’?

WITH more and more people becoming aware of the different ways scammers are trying to cheat people - such as postal, bank, phone scams - it is only natural that they will develop new tricks.

Recently, a claim has been made that scammers have a new tactic; this time ironically posing as National Scam Resource Centre (NSRC) personnel.

The modus operandi is the same, where they allege that you are involved in criminal activities.

Is there any truth to this claim?

VERDICT:

TRUE

The public has been advised to not be deceived by calls from individuals who pose as NSRC personnel alleging that they were involved in criminal activities before asking them for their banking details.

"Those who are facing such a situation, should discontinue the call and contact NSRC at 997 to avoid being a victim," said the police in a post on its official Facebook account.

The police said that the NSRC will only contact the public after a report has been made and added that it will not ask for any banking particulars.

"Those who have been victims should immediately call the NSRC at 997," it added.
