A VIDEO clip has been making the rounds on social media and messaging platforms showing pigs and chickens apparently being bred on the same farm. It has given rise to questions about whether or not this contravenes any regulations.
So is the video accurate?
Verdict:
TRUE
The Penang Veterinary Services Department (DVS) has investigated the video and given its feedback.
A joint operation by DVS and the Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) at the farm on Tuesday (July 11) found both animals being raised in the same place.
DVS said the farm was registered with it but did not have an operating licence as it did not follow regulations on cages and discharge of effluents.
"As such a notice to vacate and cease operations was issued to the farm," DVS said in a statement.
A compound notice of RM7,500 was issued with further possible penalties of up to RM30,000 in fines or three years' jail at the discretion of the deputy public prosecutor, it added.
The farm had reportedly contravened the Pig Farming Licensing (Penang) Regulations 2020 which says no other species of animals can be bred on pig farms.
The investigation by DVS also showed that chickens from the farm were not sent to any slaughterhouses and were only sold in non-Muslim markets, no other locations.
DVS has requested that the circulating of the video be stopped to avert unnecessary concerns among the public.
