RECENTLY, a post on social media had gone viral, saying that the price of tinned sardines had increased drastically.
However, other posts have pointed out that the prices could be from 24-hour outlets, which are more expensive and do not reflect the actual market price.
Is it true that the prices of tinned sardines have shot up drastically as alleged on social media?
Verdict:
FALSE
National broadcaster RTM reported that the social media posts alleging an increase in the prices of tinned sardines were inaccurate.
"The prices shown in the viral posts are believed to be from 24-hour stores and do not reflect the lower market price elsewhere.
"The market price at the moment is between RM8.80 and RM11.30," it said in a Facebook post.
RTM also urged consumers to exercise their responsibility by comparing prices and shopping at outlets with more affordable prices.
The public can visit the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry price comparison portal at https://pricecatcher.kpdn.gov.my for easy reference.
"The people are urged not to disseminate or share information that they are unsure of," RTM added in its post.
