VIDEOS of people being assaulted – or any video involving violence in general – has a tendency of going viral once it is uploaded to social media. Recently, a video uploaded to Facebook of a woman being physically attacked went viral on social media.

Did this attack happen recently as seen in the video?

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong confirmed that the incident happened as seen in the viral video uploaded on a Facebook account going by the name "Whyman Whyman" and added that it was being investigated.

"At about 10pm on July 30, we received a report from a 51-year-old local man. The man stated that the woman who was beaten in the viral video was his daughter," he said.

ACP Soffian said the 24-year-old victim left her home here in George Town last December due to family issues.

"Since then the victim has not returned home and cannot be contacted by her family. We have yet to determine the location of the incident," he said.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network services.

"We advise the public not to share the video to avoid further speculation. People who have information related to the incident are asked to come forward to help us with the investigation," he said.
