QuickCheck: Is the former Health DG’s name being misused in an eye product ad?

WHEN it comes to health products, an endorsement by a doctor can lend a lot of weight - especially if the medical professional in question was a prominent government figure.

Recently, a website claimed that former Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah endorses an eye health product. Is this a misuse of his name?

VERDICT:

TRUE

In a post on his official Facebook account, Dr Noor Hisham denied ever endorsing such a product

"To all Malaysians, this is irresponsible fake news that has gone viral using my photo and name. Please be aware of this and do not be tricked by the fake news," said Dr Noor Hisham.

He added that he would be discussing the matter with his lawyers and taking legal action on the misuse of his name and image.

It is also important to note that the website claims that Dr Noor Hisham is the "head of a department of ophthalmology" which is not his speciality as he is an endocrine surgery specialist.
