FOR the most part, Malaysians love durians and every possible opportunity to get them cheaply. As such, it would be logical to presume that scammers would try to make the most of this.
It was claimed recently that an app called “Durian King” is in fact a means for scammers to gain access to the smartphones of unsuspecting victims.
Is this true?
VERDICT:
TRUE
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued an advisory on this, warning the public to be wary of the “Durian King” mobile app.
As written in a warning published on the government portal Sebenarnya, the Commission says that the app allows a third party to access and steal a person's banking data.
It said that this includes any TAC or OTP codes issued by the bank, as well as their login name and password for online banking.
“Scammers will ask for this app to be downloaded and installed, they will claim it is necessary for the completion of the order or for payment, sales or other monetary transactions,” said the MCMC.
“The public is reminded to not download any dubious app from unidentifiable sources, and to only download apps from official stores such as the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery,” it adds
It also said that any victims of the “Durian King” app are asked to lodge a report with the National Scam Response Centre by calling “997” and uninstall the app from their phone immediately
