QuickCheck: Did a group of men try to steal cattle with a homemade tranquiliser gun?


WHEN one thinks of cattle theft, tales of the Wild West often come to mind - and as such any stories of it happening locally tend to go viral on social media.

It was claimed recently that a group of men tried to steal cattle in Raub, Pahang using a homemade tranquiliser gun. Is this true?

A man who tried to steal cattle using a homemade tranquilliser gun has been charged and sentenced in Raub.

The suspect along with two others were spotted shooting cattle with tranquillisers at a palm oil plantation in Raub at about 2.30am on Aug 3.

Raub OCPD Supt Mohd Shahril Abd Rahman said they fled in a blue Honda Odyssey when they were spotted by the owner of the cattle, but ended up crashing the vehicle.

However, all three managed to escape.

Following the incident, Supt Mohd Shahril said police managed to track down a 38-year-old suspect on Aug 6.

"The suspect is an unemployed male from Jerantut, who has 11 prior drug and criminal offences. He admitted being involved in the incident with two other accomplices who are still at large," said Supt Mohd Shahril in a statement.

He added the suspect was investigated for attempting to steal cattle and for possessing a weapon without licence or permit.

Supt Mohd Shahril said the suspect was charged in the Raub magistrate's court on Aug 9 and fined RM2,000 in default of six months' imprisonment.

He said police had identified the two accomplices and were tracking them down.
