RECENTLY, screenshots of emails purportedly sent by the police have gone viral online; in these emails, the recipients are told that they have an outstanding fine and that they will face prosecution in court if it is not paid up in time.
These emails also contain details telling the recipients how to pay the fine online.
Is it true that these emails are in fact from scammers posing as the police?
Verdict:
TRUE
The police have denied issuing such emails, saying in a post on its Cyber Crime Alert Facebook page that they are in fact a phishing attempt.
It said that it is aware that many people have been receiving these emails lately.
“These are phishing emails that ask the reader to click on a scam link that is in the email. Contact the relevant authorities before conducting any transactions if there is any doubt,” said the police.
