A screenshot of a group chat, purportedly among the Maritime Malaysia Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) top management, has gone viral.
The messages seem to imply that the director-general of a government agency had "unintentionally" issued an instruction – to the agency he heads – to approve his daughter's application for a senior officers' training scheme.
The woman, who is now supposedly working for MMEA, "apologises" for his actions and says that despite her father's intervention, she is well-qualified to carry out her role in the MMEA.
Did any such conversation take place and is there such a WhatApp group?
VERDICT:
FALSE
In a Facebook post, The MMEA said it had carried out an internal investigation over the matter, which revealed that there is no such group chat involving its top personnel and that the screenshots were all fake.
"The MMEA is very disappointed as there are irresponsible individuals who have created the fake messages with the aim of tarnishing the image of a senior government officer.
"Netizens are advised not to spread the screenshots of the fake WhatsApp Group and the MMEA will not hesitate to take legal action against those responsible for creating and spreading it," read the statement.
