QuickCheck: Was there a frenzied scramble for cheap rice in a Sandakan supermarket?

A VIDEO clip making the social media rounds shows people rushing to grab what appear to be 10kg packs of rice in a supermarket.

The 30sec video shows shoppers, mostly middle-aged to elderly, jostling one another to get at the rice while a man's voice is heard telling them not to fight over it as there is a lot of stock.

It is said that the incident was recorded in a supermarket in Sabah's Sandakan district.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

A check found that the incident happened over the weekend in a supermarket in Sandakan during its two-day Rahmah sale on Sept 30 and Oct 1.

Sabah Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director Georgie Abas said the video was recorded on Saturday (Sept 30).

“I think the customers were rushing and excited because the price of that brand of rice was reduced from RM36 to RM28,” he said when contacted Wednesday (Oct 4).

He said it could also be that the customers were afraid that stocks would run out, so they just wanted to get their hands on whatever they could even though there was a limit of two packs per customer.

Georgie said the ministry had advised the supermarket manager to come up with a better arrangement in future to prevent fights or problems during such sales.

He said with the increasing price of goods, especially rice, people were more than eager to get discounted items whenever they had the chance.
