RECENTLY, advertisements claiming to be from Mid Valley Megamall have been sent to Facebook users along with an offer to win branded perfume, provided that a recipient clicks a link on it and enters their personal details including their address and banking information.
Is Mid Valley Megamall being impersonated on Facebook as part of a phishing scam?
VERDICT:
TRUE
In a statement, CyberSecurity Malaysia issued a warning on their Facebook page stating that these ads are in fact from fake Facebook pages running a phishing scam posing as Mid Valley Megamall.
“If a social media user clicks on the link in the ad, it will take a person to a website where they will be asked to complete a survey, fill in their postal address or banking details,” it said.
CyberSecurity Malaysia added that such sites will claim that the items offered will be delivered within the next three to five days and that victims will have to make a payment after receiving their items.
“We have informed the relevant authorities of this to conduct an investigation and take appropriate action. Social media users are urged to always be careful if they receive messages like this,” it said.
