IT HAS been claimed recently that people are being duped by scammers who take over their WhatsApp accounts.
Apparently, scammers are hijacking WhatsApp accounts and then sending fraudulent appeals for help, containing links for the transfers, to people on the victims' contact lists.
Is this really happening?
Verdict:
TRUE
CyberSecurity Malaysia revealed on Thursday (Dec 7) that fraudulent activities are being carried out using the messaging app where the perpetrators pass themselves off as friends of the intended victim.
The perpetrator will hack someone's WhatsApp account, hijacking it and reaching out to the people on the victim's contact list.
The messages will claim that the "sender" is in trouble and needs financial help, with a promise to return the money as soon as possible.
A link is provided in the messages for the targets to make the transfer.
CyberSecurity Malaysia advised people not to click on any links they receive through WhatsApp without verifying them.
"We advise people not to click on any link received via WhatsApp. Do not make any money transfer until you have confirmed and verified with your contacts,” it said.
