QuickCheck: Are fake substitute teacher contract job ads circulating online?

Advertisements for contract substitute teachers via the Malaysia Short-Term Employment Programme (MySTEP) have been appearing on social media. It features a local actress and promises a monthly pay of about RM2,000.

MyStep is indeed a government initiative to provide short-term contract work in various government ministries, agencies and linked companies, and there was news of the Education Ministry making plans to fill up teaching vacancies around the country. However, are scammers taking advantage of the situation?

Is the advertisement for contract substitute teachers via MySTEP a scam?

Verdict:

TRUE

The Education Ministry and the featured actress deny any involvement in the advertisement.

This is according to Biar Betul! who also found that clicking on it takes users to a third-party advertisement-infested website with a fake form designed to steal personal information.

It advises those interested in short-term contract work with government ministries should use official channels such as MySTEP at mystep.mof.gov.my instead.
