A VIDEO making the rounds on social media shows a man attacking a Road Transport Department (JPJ) officer during an enforcement check.
The video, which went viral on Tuesday (Jan 3), showed a driver refusing to cooperate with JPJ enforcers who ordered him to stop after he was seen driving suspiciously.
When the officers tried to detain him, the driver attacked one of them.
Is it true that a member of the public recently tried to assault a JPJ officer who had stopped him on the road?
VERDICT:
FALSE
While the events in the video did happen, it is not a recent incident from 2024.
Kedah JPJ director Aman Shah Hashim said the department is aware of the video that had gone viral on Tuesday but clarified that the incident had actually happened last year and action had already been taken.
"The man, who is a sugarcane drink seller, was sentenced to one day in jail and fined RM4,000 by a Magistrate's Court in Jitra on Nov 27, 2023," Aman Shah told Bernama on Wednesday (Jan 3).
He added that the 24-year-old had been arrested and charged under Section 353 of the Penal Code.
“An investigation found that the video recording took place on Nov 22 at 4.04pm, on Jalan Tasik Darul Aman, Jitra.
"At the time, on-duty officers were conducting enforcement rounds and identified a vehicle being driven suspiciously.
“An initial inspection found three offences, namely an expired Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM), no insurance coverage, and an expired Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) certificate,” he said.
He added that the officers had instructed the vehicle to stop, but the driver refused to cooperate.
“When detained, the suspect committed a criminal act by assaulting the officer, using abusive language, provocation, and obstructing a public servant from performing their duties,” he told Bernama.
