QuickCheck: Did a man lead cops on a 20km car chase in Johor?


A VIDEO of a man being arrested near a petrol station has gone viral on social media.

It is claimed that the man was apprehended after leading Johor Baru police on a 20km pursuit and that he had a criminal record.

Is this true?

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the incident happened around 1.30am on Sunday (Jan 14) when a police car on patrol spotted a suspicious vehicle along Jalan Besar Skudai heading towards Tampoi.

"My men instructed the driver to stop for an inspection, but the suspect sped off.

"We were able to cut off the suspect's escape route at a petrol station where his car then hit a police car before coming to a stop," he said in a statement on Monday (Jan 15).

ACP Balveer added that the 37-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene.

He said a parang was found upon checking the suspect's vehicle.

"He also has several crime and drug offences on his record and tested positive for drugs," he said.

The suspect has been remanded until Wednesday (Jan 17) for further investigation under Section 186 of the Penal Code (for obstruction of a public servant), the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958, he added.
