FROM high-profile personalities to government agencies, scammers have resorted to impersonating legitimate firms and brand names for fraudulent purposes.
Through such scams, not only are the public deceived and cheated of their hard-earned cash, but companies too have to defend against any adverse impact on their reputation.
Recently, a popular mall in Kuala Lumpur was impersonated on Facebook by fake luxury accounts trying to trick customers. Is this true?
Verdict:
TRUE
Suria KLCC said it is aware of the existence of such a Facebook which goes by the name of Suria KLCC Mall, which is an unauthorised third party with the intention of impersonating or presenting themselves as Suria KLCC Mall.
"These unauthorised pages aim to attract potential customers for direct purchases, despite the fact that Suria KLCC does not engage in the retail sales of goods, where such transactions are conducted by our retail partners within the mall.
"We strongly alert our shoppers that the Facebook pages are not affiliated, associated, permitted or endorsed by Suria KLCC in any manner,” it said on its FB page.
The mall strongly recommends relying only on information provided through its official social media or online platforms and exercising caution against falling victim to scams propagated by unauthorised third-party pages.
"It is crucial to emphasise that we take this matter seriously and are exploring all available options to address this issue.
"We thank our concerned shoppers for sharing with us these pages as well and appreciate your understanding as well as support towards Suria KLCC," it added.
