MALAYSIA’S transportation infrastructure depends greatly on diesel-powered vehicles.
From transporting people from the city to their hometowns during festive seasons to sending that thing you ordered online to you overnight, it was probably made possible by diesel-powered vehicles.
So it was a big deal when videos on social media popped up claiming that the government would stop diesel subsidies in March this year except for those with a fleet card.
The fear is that the change would mean a price increase for goods and services.
But is the claim valid?
Verdict:
FALSE
Although it was claimed in the video that the information came from a petrol station owner, another video by Biar Betul debunked it.
It said that the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry had already denied the allegations in a press release on Jan 1.
In addition, the authorities have reiterated that the diesel subsidy would stay the same for now until a new system for targeted subsidy distribution is announced.
