A video clip recently made its rounds on Telegram, showing a group of armed men vandalising a home.

In the video, about half a dozen men wielding sharp objects and steel pipes were seen entering the compound of a home, smashing everything they could find.

It was said that this incident happened in Sarawak. Is this true?

Verdict:

TRUE

In a statement on Thursday (Feb 8), Padawan OCPD Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed that the incident occurred at a house on Jalan Batu Kawan in Kuching.

He said police received a report of the incident from a woman complainant on Sunday (Feb 4) and that no injuries were reported.

“The motive is still under investigation,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons and Section 427 of the same code for mischief and causing damage.

A conviction for the first offence leads to imprisonment of up to five years, a fine or both, while for the second offence, the penalty is imprisonment for two years, a fine or both.

Supt Abang Zainal Abidin said the district criminal investigation division managed to track down one of the suspects, a 20-year-old man, on Wednesday (Feb 7).

He said the suspect would be produced in a Kuching court on Thursday for a remand order while police stepped up their search for the man's accomplices.

The investigation also involves the state D7 (vice, gambling and secret societies prevention) division of the Criminal Investigation Department, he added.
